| .. | EIN ABGRUND VON LANDESVERRAT (STUDIES ON THE POLITICAL SUBJECT #2) Wall drawing, chairs, radio, radio transmitter, audio-cd, 2004 Memory, Nassauischer Kunstverein, Wiesbaden, 2006 Hidden (hi)stories, Galerie K&S, Berlin, 2004 The so-called Spiegel Affair in 1962 marks the first severe confrontation between the democartic public and the elected government in the post-war era of the Federal Republic of Germany. The incident which involved the occupation of the offices of the news magazine Der Spiegel in Hamburg by police forces, and its various implications and collateral effects form the background of Ein Abgrund von Landesverrat, the second installation of Florian Wüst's Studies on the political subject series. ![]() installation view, Galerie K&S, Berlin, 2004 Three voices, two male and one female, assemble an audio play that is transmitted onto a radio situated on a chair. The collage of dialogues consists of re-edited fragments from speeches and statements by politicians and journalists such as Konrad Adenauer, Hermann Höcherl, Gert von Paczensky, Werner Höfer or Sebastian Haffner; the fragments are extracted from historical documents and articles, for instance, from the transcript of the debate about the Spiegel Affair in the West-German House of Parliament on November 7, 1962, or from respective reports and talk show on television. The audio play (11 min, looped) adopts the form of a live radio broadcast in order to extract its content from its historical context, and to confront it in the consciousness of the visitor or viewer with current poltical debates and societal issues. The line drawings on the wall refer to original photographs and graphic representations that are related to the Spiegel Affair. The setting of the piece, comprising the wall drawing, the written credits of the radio play, the radio and chairs, defines its own associative space. Besides providing information about this distinct period of West-German history, Wüst's installation intends to discuss how much processes of negotiation in democratic societies are shaped by the power of language, the instrumentalisation of symbolic terms, and the committment of individuals. ![]() installation view, Galerie K&S, Berlin, 2004 ![]() installation view, Galerie K&S, Berlin, 2004 |
